Our Projects

Flagship Project: The CDK Programme in Mumbai

The CDK program, which has been developed by Butterflies india (NGO), works in the slums of Mumbai to support street children in their livelihoods by providing them with a simple but solid system to manage their money. The children do not make much money, but the Khazana Foundation gives them the opportunity to manage what they have themselves. Many of these children live in the streets, live under bridges and do not have a stable home environment where shelter and food are predictable. They are often unregistered and their chances to break this cycle of poverty is limited.

The children manage their own money through a number of ‘bank’ branches where these same children manage the books and decide on advances. As these children are the most vulnerable of society, the financial skills training is supplemented with social skills training and enhancing self-identification. Children learn how to prioritize, make plans, communicate and learn what their rights are.

  • CDK Residential Camp

Yearly get togethers with children and other CDK branches, reinforces a sense of belonging and allows us to focus on peripheral events that impact independence and self-reliance.

Due to lock down a large gathering was not possible. However, in the smaller communities we encouraged celebrations amongst children which also served to highlight important events like National Science Day, Youth Day and Women’s Day , organised by the Hamara Foundation.

  • Entrepreneurial Trainings

By teaching how to write a business plan, principles of accountancy, problem identification and problem-solving, the Khazana foundation empowers children to take control of their economic situation and their personal development. By attending these courses, children will learn how to identify opportunities, solve problems, find collaboration, dare to innovate and trust their creativity!

The final objective of the course is to give children a solid foundation to find a job or create their own business.

  • Financial Skills Trainings

We believe financial skills have enormous importance for marginalized children. Bookkeeping courses are one of the basic skills that need to be taught to run a business successfully.

Providing bookkeeping knowledge such as recording, organizing, reporting, and interpreting financial transactions will empower children to manage their future savings.

  • Social Skills Trainings

We organized life skill workshops to provide children with important tools for development. Life skills are the building blocks that allow children to apply the knowledge they acquire as part of the financial literacy program to real world situations. The life skills trainings performed are closely aligned with the context in which these children live and grow.

Implementing the skills they have learned, children can make structural changes both in their personal lives and in their communities.

  • Advanced Khazana Programme

After successfully following the CDK programme for a number of years, children are on the verge of getting access to the financial system. The Khazana Foundation provides support for those successful students who can demonstrate a business case for an enterprise. After a pitch and objective selection, students can be awarded a one time only sum of money to help them on their way.

  • Scholar Support Programme

The Khazana Foundation will help a student who needs support for a project, education or course which is related to the principles of financial inclusion as well as the guiding principles of Khazana Foundation. Students will be asked to submit a request for support, which will be evaluated by the Khazana Foundation board.

  • Money in our day-to-day

In collaboration with MobileSchool.org, the Khazana Foundation has developed two boards to engage in discussion with children on money in situational settings.

Built on the five essential pillars -earn, spend, save, borrow, and invest- children will gain knowledge and have more support in making informed decisions as they can recognize how money plays a role in their day to day lives.

The Story of Afreen and Nazama

Afreen and Nazama followed entrepreneurial skills and business planning courses. The courses taught them how to negotiate, communicate and strategize. Together they created an impressive business proposal for the business they want to set up: a Chinese food stall.

To reward them for their great work and display of entrepreneurial skills, Khazana is awarding them a headstart through the Khazana Advanced Program.

Congratulations, they are now entrepreneurs!
